System Shock tells the story of an unnamed hacker who is caught attempting to hack into the Citadel station. The poor guy is brought before the head of the TriOptimum corporation, Edward Diego, who offers him a deal to work against the station’s artificial intelligence, SHODAN.

The guy steals a mutagenic virus for Diego to sell on the black market as a biological weapon. In exchange, he receives a neural implant that is supposed to make him nearly invincible, but instead, he ends up in a six-month coma. When the hero wakes up, he discovers that SHODAN has launched an attack and has already taken over the station, presumably in retaliation for the theft.
Throughout the game with its nonlinear storyline, the character must battle all the robots aboard the ship. Moreover, even humans become enemies – now they are AI-controlled cyborgs. The hacker will also need to use all his cunning and skills to defeat not only the artificial intelligence but also his former employer, who becomes the most powerful cyborg. This will require not only running through enclosed corridors but also occasionally entering cyberspace. The main objective of completing System Shock is to prevent SHODAN from infiltrating Earth’s computers and disabling the laser to infect humanity with a dangerous virus, with the help of Rebecca Lansing, a counter-terrorism consultant, assisting the main character.
